Book Review: Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime— Mizuki Nomura

SUMMARY:

For Tohko Amano, a third-year high school student and self-styled “book girl,” being the head of the literary club is more than just an extracurricular activity. It’s her bread and butter…literally! Tohko is actually a literature-gobbling demon, who can be found at all hours of the day munching on torn out pages from all kinds of books. But for Tohko, the real delicacies are hand-written stories. To satisfy her gourmet tastes, she’s employed (rather, browbeaten) one Konoha Inoue, who scribbles away each day after school to satisfy Tohko’s appetite. But when another student comes knocking on the literary club door for advice on writing love letters, will Tohko discover a new kind of delicacy?

REVIEW:
Book Girl follows the same format as many other Japanese light novels: we follow a cynical world-weary carpet of a guy who is reluctantly dragged into a strange club by the school’s prettiest and craziest tsundere girl. She forces him into a tiresome life of adventure when he’d rather just be going on life as it was before all the nonsense started. Every time he decides tell the crazy girl to go to hell and leave him alone, he gets a timely panty shot and is instantly pacified and compliant. It’s a quite a boring format, and if you’ve read one such light novel (Harumi Suzumiya), you’ve read them all.

These types of good are always populated by the same stereotypes: the irrational woman, the weary guy, a nerd, a clumsy girl with big jiggly boobs, the schools hottest guy… and maybe a teacher that either wants to expose the club or to support the club’s endeavors. Book Girl is no exception. 
 

So you may be wondering, why I want to continue reading this series? Well, it is its literary motif. I loved how Nomura analyzed and wrote about the different literary works mentioned in the book. Book Girl becomes a gem when Tohko, which snacking on a page, uses culinary language to describe how for example Barbara Cartland’s The Key of Love tastes. 

This particular book, […] The Suicidal Mime, focuses on the author Osamu Dazai’s existential novel No Longer Human. To solve the mystery around the love letters that Konoha has to write for Chia, the unlikely pair must analyze the work and understand how Dazai lived and thought. It is an adventure in literary history, a genre which really appeals to me. I look forward to read the next book in the series, Book Girl and the Famished Spirit.

 

OMDÖME:

Book Girl har samma upplägg som många andra Japanska light novels: vi följer en cynisk livstrött dörrmatta till kille som blir ovilligt indragen i en konstig klubb av skolans vackraste men knäppaste tsundere tjej. Hon tvingar honom att gå med på tröttsamma äventyr som han egentligen inte har någon lust att vara med om. Och varje gång han bestämer sig för att be henne dra åt helvete får han en panty shot och blir genast lugn igen. Det är ett ganska tråkig mönster, och har man läst en sådan light novel (Harumi Suzumiya), så har man läst dem alla.  

Det är alltid samma typ av stereotyper som befolkar sådana böcker: en fullkomligt orimlig tjej, en trött kille, en nörd, en klumpig tjej med stora gungande tuttar, skolans hetaste kille… och kanske en lärare som antigen vill avslöja klubben eller stötta dem. Book Girl är inget undantag. 

Man kan då undra varför jag vill försätta med den här serien? Jo, för seriens literära vändning. Jag älskade hur Nomura analyserade och skev om olika litterära texter. Boken blir bra när Tohko börjar mumsa på en riven sida och försöker med kulinariska termer förklara för sin kompanjon hur t.ex. Barbara Cartlands The Key of Love smakar. 

Just den här boken fokuserar på författaren Osamu Dazai’s existentiella roman No Longer Human. För att lösa mysteriet kring kärleksbreven som Konoha skriver åt Chia, måste de analysera verket och förstå hur Dazai levde och tänkte. Det är ett äventyr i litteraturhistoria, något som verkligen passar mig. Jag ser fram emot att få läsa nästa bok Book Girl and the Famished Spirit.

Audiobook Review: Neuromancer— William Gibson

To destroy an AI or to save it, that is the question...

REVIEW:

This is the novel that put cyberpunk on the map! If Neuromancer is not a proper classic then it’s definitely a cut classic.

I liked the premise of the novel but found the plot to have a tad too much action for my taste. That drawback aside, I just could not shake off the feeling that I was listening to something ultra-cool! Even though the tech is a bit on the old-school, I was completely sold on the idea that hackers need to be “plugged in” to a matrix— a virtual world where all kinds of exciting stuff happens. The action is quite thrilling but it isn’t too fast-paced; nevertheless, this is really more of an action tale rather than a suspenseful one, so it’s very different from the type of literature I’d used to reading. In fact, this book reminds me of the cool feeling I had when I watched the Matrix-movies… and I suspect that its creators were partially inspired by this iconic novel.

As for the characters, in my opinion they were a bit too impersonal. I had a hard time sympathizing with the druggie protagonist. Maybe it’s the Gibson’s nihilistic writing style that makes me really not want to have a beer or hang out with any of the characters I come across of in the book. On the other hand, all of the characters are so damn cool, in the way that film noir characters are cool. My favorite is Molly Millions: she is a so called street samurai— a sort of bodyguard for criminals. She’s a woman who does not take shit from anyone, but nevertheless seems to have a moral compass underneath her tough, cynical exterior.

So, my conclusion is that the books shortcomings must be balanced against the fact that Gibson’s capability maintaining a constant sub-zero level of cool  throughout the story— which isn’t bad for a (then) debut work.

This book is ok as an audiobook. I really did like Robertson Dean’s deep, dark voice as it felt just right for the life-weary settings that Gibson penned. Dean’s reading style was very neutral, letting the author’s narrative stand on its own legs, in keeping with the book’s nihilistic atmosphere. 

OMDÖME:
Det här är romanen som satte genren cyberpunk på kartan! Om Neuromancer inte är en ”riktig” klassiker så är den definitivt en kult-klassiker.

Jag gillade bokens idé men tyckte att handlingen hade lite för mycket action för min smak. Men trots det, kunde jag inte släpa känslan av att jag lyssnade på något ultra-coolt! Även om technologin är lite föråldrad, så blev jag helt såld på tanken av att hackare behöver ”jackas in” till en matris där spännande grejer händer. Jag får samma coola känslan av att kolla på Matrix-filmerna. Handlingen är rätt spännande och farten inte jättehög, men som sagt är detta mer av en action berättelse än ett mysterium så det är en typ av spänning som jag inte är van vid att läsa om. 

Karaktärerna tyckte jag var lite för opersonliga, och jag kände att det var svårt att relatera till den knarkande huvudkaraktären. Det kanske är den högst nihilistiska skrivsättet som gör att man helst inte vill ta en öl och hänga med någon av personerna man råkar på. Å andra sidan är alla karaktärer så himla fräcka: de är typiska färgstarka film noir karaktärer, fast i framtiden. Men favoriten är ändå Molly Millions hon är en så kallad street samurai— en slags livvakt åt de kriminella. Hon är en tuff tjej hon tar inte något skit, men verkar ändå ha fasta moraliska grunder under sitt cyniska yttre.

Bokens brister balanseras dock mot det faktum att Gibson lyckas få storyn att kännas så cool att den konstant når sub-zero nivåer— vilket inte är dåligt för en (då) debuterande roman författare. 

Den här boken är helt ok i ljudboksformat. Jag tycker om Robertson Deans djupa, mörka röst: den kännas helt rätt i de livströtta miljöerna som Gibson beskriver. Deans uppläsarstill är väldigt neutral, han låter författarens berättande stå på egna ben och jag tycker att det passar ihop med den nihilistiska attityden som boken förmedlar.
