30 Days of Books- Day 24: A book that you wish more people would’ve read

Har ni hört talas om Susy-böckerna? Om ni har så är ni super häftiga! Jag har aldrig träffat någon annan som har läst den serien, och jag önskar verkligen att fler hade läst den. Det kanske finns fler danskar som känner till böckerna…

Susy böckerna är skrivna av en färöisk författare som hette Daniel Jacob Eilif Mortensen, men han gick under pseudonymen Gretha Stevns och skrev flickromaner: Pernille och Susy heter dem. Ganska roligt, eller? ^^ Tydligen så fastnade han i Danmark under den tyska ockupationen och kunde inte åka tillbaka till Färörarna. Han behövde ett sätt att försörja sig på, så han började skriva flickböcker.

Susy är en serie på ungefär 20 böcker om en natur-älskande pojkflickaktig tjej som är dotter till en skogsvakt. Hon är en trevlig och modig tjej som har dåliga betyg i skolan men som har en stark känsla för rättvisa och som alltid lyckas hamna i ett äventyr där hon måste rädda människor som är i nöd! Första boken kom ut 1943, då är Susy elva år och rätt modern för den tiden. Hon var en ”woman of action” så att säga.

Vad jag vet, har serien blivit översatt till Finska, Franska, Isländska, Holländska, Norska, Portugisiska, Spanska och Svenska. Jag har 7 böcker i serien på Portugisiska, jag hittade dem i en dammig second-hand affär i Lissabon och då (någon gång i mitten av 90-talet) hade förlaget redan slutat ge ut dem. Jag köpte dem för att jag tyckte att illustrationerna var väldigt vackra. Fast illustratören för de portugisiska böckerna är inte desamma som för de daska som inte är desamma som för de franska. :S

I alla fall, jag försökter fortfarande samla hela serien, men det går dåligt. Jag brukar kolla runt på second-hand webbsidor, fast oftast hittar jag bara de böcker jag redan har…  det är därför jag önskar att flera hade läst den här bokserien. ;-)

Have you ever heard of the Susy books? If you have, you're awesome! Because I've never come across anyone else that has read this series, and I really wish more people had! Well, there probably are a lot of Danes that have read these books... but still, haven't met a single one, so far. 

The Susy books are written by a Faeroese author named Daniel Jacob Eilif Mortensen, but he went under the pseudonym Gretha Stevns and wrote so called "girl" books, like the the Susy and Pernille series. Pretty funny, huh? ^_^ Apparently, he got stuck in Denmark during the German occupation and could not go back to the Faeroe Islands, so he needed a way to make some money. 

The Susy books are a series of ca. 20 books about a nature-loving tomboy who is the daughter of a forester. She doesn't get good grades at school, but she's nice, brave and a character with a strong sense of justice... and somehow she always manages to get embroiled in an adventure where she must rescue people in need! The first book came out in 1943, and featured the eleven year old Susy as a "woman of action" so to speak, something that was a modern idea for its time.

From what I've seen, this series has been translated into Finnish, French, Icelandic, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish (so there must be quite a few Susy readers out there!). I have seven books in the series in Portuguese-- I found them in a dusty second-hand shop in Lisbon some time in the mid-90's, and at time it was already out of print. I admit it, I bought them because of the illustrations, though the illustrator for the Portuguese books is not the same as the Danish editions, let alone the illustrators in all the other languages. :S

In any case, I am still trying to collect the entire series, but it's not going too well. I try to check on second hand stores online, but most of the time I just find the ones that I already have... that's why I wish more people had read this book series.
