30 Days of Books- Day 16: Favorite female character

Jag tror att min favorit av alla kvinnliga huvudpersoner är Kate Sutton. Skället är nog för att hennes karaktär är så jordnära, orubblig och prestigelös. Jag föreställer mig att hon är en person som har en diskret själsäkerhet, med lite humor och mycket godhet. Grejen med Kate Sutton är att hon skulle kunna finnas på riktigt, vi skulle inte vara de bästa vänner men jag skulle ha respekterat henne oerhört. Eller så har jag läst The Perilous Gard så många gånger att jag tror att jag känner henne bättre än alla andra litterära personer.  Jag vet inte, men hon har en x-faktor som får mig att vilja ”träffa” henne om och om igen.

Kate Sutton (from The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope) is probably my favorite female character. I think I like her because her character is so down to earth, principled, steadfast and prestige-less. I imagine her as someone with a quiet, yet immovable confidence, little humor and a lot of goodness. The thing with Kate feels like a real life person and not must a character in a book. And  if she would have existed IRL, we might not have been best friends (I probably would have thought of her as insufferable) but I would have respected her immensely (just like her sister Alicia does)... Maybe I've read The Perilous Gard way too many times, and fancy myself knowing her better than any other literary characters, but one thing is for sure: in my opinion she has that  x-factor that makes me want to be in her company again and again.

30 Days of Books- Day 02: A book that I’ve read more than 3 times

The Perilous Gard av Elizabeth Marie Pope brukar jag läsa nästan varje år. Jag minns att jag köpte den när jag var 12 när min skola hade en bokloppis och jag blev förälskad i omslaget. Den här boken kommer jag aldrig att tröttna på; min kopia är nu sönderläst med en massa antäckningar vid marginalerna om karaktär analyser och storyns uppbyggnad. Ändå är det svårt att förklara varför jag tycker att den här boken är så bra…

Det har skrivits många retellings av Tam Lin legenden, och enligt mig är The Perilous Gard den bästa av dem. Kate är en cool hjältinna: hon är klumpig och inte alls vacker, men hon är intelligent, nyficken och praktisk av sig. Dialogen är rapp och jag älskar bokens mystiska stämning—som är utan några övernaturliga inslag. 

The Perilous Gard, by Elizabeth Marie Pope is a book that I read almost every year. I remember I bought it when I was 12, at my school's used books sale. I bought it because I fell in love with the cover. I will never get tired of it: my copy is now tattered and full of notes on the margins about character analysis and plot structure. Despite them, it's hard to explain why I think this books is soo good...

Many authors have done retelling of the Tam Lin legend, and according to me, The Perilous Gard is the best of them. Kate is a cool heroine: she's clumsy and extremely plain (which is worse than being ugly), but she's intelligent, curious and pragmatic. The dialogue in the book is witty and I love the book has this Gothic atmosphere- without venturing into the paranormal.
